From: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.7-rc1 commit 42c5a3b04bf672292b2da7b51745728609a29691 category: feature bugzilla: https://atomgit.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/9850 Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?i... ------------------------------------------- The arm64_cpu_capabilities::cpu_enable callbacks are intended for cpu-local feature enablement (e.g. poking system registers). These get called for each online CPU when boot/system cpucaps get finalized and enabled, and get called whenever a CPU is subsequently onlined. For KPTI with the ARM64_UNMAP_KERNEL_AT_EL0 cpucap, we use the kpti_install_ng_mappings() function as the cpu_enable callback. This does a mixture of cpu-local configuration (setting VBAR_EL1 to the appropriate trampoline vectors) and some global configuration (rewriting the swapper page tables to sue non-glboal mappings) that must happen at most once. This patch splits kpti_install_ng_mappings() into a cpu-local cpu_enable_kpti() initialization function and a system-wide kpti_install_ng_mappings() function. The cpu_enable_kpti() function is responsible for selecting the necessary cpu-local vectors each time a CPU is onlined, and the kpti_install_ng_mappings() function performs the one-time rewrite of the translation tables too use non-global mappings. Splitting the two makes the code a bit easier to follow and also allows the page table rewriting code to be marked as __init such that it can be freed after use. Because of that, it prints a message for each core as it is detected. This becomes tedious when there are hundreds of cores. Instead, for CPU features which can be enabled on a subset of the present cores, lets wait until update_cpu_capabilities() and print the subset of cores the feature was enabled on. From: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.17-rc1 commit 3eb06f6ce3af65df4e9b3d8fc1d711fbfe7673b3 category: feature bugzilla: https://atomgit.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/9850 Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?i... ------------------------------------------- For system-wide capabilities, the kernel has the SCOPE_SYSTEM type. Such capabilities are checked once the SMP boot has completed using the sanitised ID registers. However, there is a need for a new capability type similar in scope to the system one but with checking performed locally on each CPU during boot (e.g. based on MIDR_EL1 which is not a sanitised register). Introduce ARM64_CPUCAP_MATCH_ALL_EARLY_CPUS which, together with ARM64_CPUCAP_SCOPE_LOCAL_CPU, ensures that such capability is enabled only if all early CPUs have it. For ease of use, define ARM64_CPUCAP_EARLY_LOCAL_CPU_FEATURE which combines SCOPE_LOCAL_CPU, PERMITTED_FOR_LATE_CPUS and MATCH_ALL_EARLY_CPUS. To support BBML2 in as wide a range of contexts as we can, we want not only the architectural guarantees that BBML2 makes, but additionally want BBML2 to not create TLB conflict aborts. Not causing aborts avoids us having to prove that no recursive faults can be induced in any path that uses BBML2, allowing its use for arbitrary kernel mappings. This feature builds on the previous ARM64_CPUCAP_EARLY_LOCAL_CPU_FEATURE, as all early cpus must support BBML2 for us to enable it (and any later cpus must also support it to be onlined). Not onlining late cpus that do not support BBML2 is unavoidable, as we might currently be using BBML2 semantics for kernel memory regions. We have to mark each entry as contiguous, and we would like to smear the dirty and young (access) bits across all entries in the contiguous block. Currently, we do this by first accumulating the dirty and young bits in the block, using an atomic __ptep_get_and_clear() and the relevant pte_{dirty,young}() calls, performing a tlbi, and finally smearing the correct bits across the block using __set_ptes(). This approach works fine for BBM level 0, but with support for BBM level 2 we are allowed to reorder the tlbi to after setting the pagetable entries. We expect the time cost of a tlbi to be much greater than the cost of clearing and resetting the PTEs. As such, this reordering of the tlbi outside the window where our PTEs are invalid greatly reduces the duration the PTE are visibly invalid for other threads. This reduces the likelyhood of a concurrent page walk finding an invalid PTE, reducing the likelyhood of a fault in other threads, and improving performance (more so when there are more threads). Because we support via allowlist only bbml2 implementations that never raise conflict aborts and instead invalidate the tlb entries automatically in hardware, we can avoid the final flush altogether. However, avoiding the intermediate tlbi+dsb must be carefully considered to ensure that we remain both correct and performant. We document our reasoning and the expected interactions further in the contpte_convert() source. To do so we rely on the aarch64 spec (DDI 0487L.a D8.7.1.1) requirements RNGLXZ and RJQQTC to provide guarantees that the elision is correct. So only assert at least mmap read lock when walking the kernel page tables. From: Lorenzo Stoakes <lorenzo.stoakes@oracle.com> mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.17-rc1 commit 96d81e4766f9e88b66a0502b5a7f34a4c20ac754 category: feature bugzilla: https://atomgit.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/9850 Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?i... ------------------------------------------- walk_page_range_novma() is rather confusing - it supports two modes, one used often, the other used only for debugging. The first mode is the common case of traversal of kernel page tables, which is what nearly all callers use this for. Secondly it provides an unusual debugging interface that allows for the traversal of page tables in a userland range of memory even for that memory which is not described by a VMA. It is far from certain that such page tables should even exist, but perhaps this is precisely why it is useful as a debugging mechanism. As a result, this is utilised by ptdump only. Historically, things were reversed - ptdump was the only user, and other parts of the kernel evolved to use the kernel page table walking here. Since we have some complicated and confusing locking rules for the novma case, it makes sense to separate the two usages into their own functions. Doing this also provide self-documentation as to the intent of the caller - are they doing something rather unusual or are they simply doing a standard kernel page table walk? We therefore establish two separate functions - walk_page_range_debug() for this single usage, and walk_kernel_page_table_range() for general kernel page table walking. The walk_page_range_debug() function is currently used to traverse both userland and kernel mappings, so we maintain this and in the case of kernel mappings being traversed, we have walk_page_range_debug() invoke walk_kernel_page_table_range() internally. We additionally make walk_page_range_debug() internal to mm. From: Dev Jain <dev.jain@arm.com> mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.18-rc1 commit a660194dd101e937c319171ad99c3fbe466fd825 category: feature bugzilla: https://atomgit.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/9850 Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?i... ------------------------------------------- This patch paves the path to enable huge mappings in vmalloc space and linear map space by default on arm64. For this we must ensure that we can handle any permission games on the kernel (init_mm) pagetable. Previously, __change_memory_common() used apply_to_page_range() which does not support changing permissions for block mappings. We move away from this by using the pagewalk API, similar to what riscv does right now. It is the responsibility of the caller to ensure that the range over which permissions are being changed falls on leaf mapping boundaries. For systems with BBML2, this will be handled in future patches by dyanmically splitting the mappings when required. Unlike apply_to_page_range(), the pagewalk API currently enforces the init_mm.mmap_lock to be held. To avoid the unnecessary bottleneck of the mmap_lock for our usecase, this patch extends this generic API to be used locklessly, so as to retain the existing behaviour for changing permissions. Apart from this reason, it is noted at [1] that KFENCE can manipulate kernel pgtable entries during softirqs. It does this by calling set_memory_valid() -> __change_memory_common(). This being a non-sleepable context, we cannot take the init_mm mmap lock. Add comments to highlight the conditions under which we can use the lockless variant - no underlying VMA, and the user having exclusive control over the range, thus guaranteeing no concurrent access. We require that the start and end of a given range do not partially overlap block mappings, or cont mappings. Return -EINVAL in case a partial block mapping is detected in any of the PGD/P4D/PUD/PMD levels; add a corresponding comment in update_range_prot() to warn that eliminating such a condition is the responsibility of the caller. Note that, the pte level callback may change permissions for a whole contpte block, and that will be done one pte at a time, as opposed to an atomic operation for the block mappings. This is fine as any access will decode either the old or the new permission until the TLBI. apply_to_page_range() currently performs all pte level callbacks while in lazy mmu mode. Since arm64 can optimize performance by batching barriers when modifying kernel pgtables in lazy mmu mode, we would like to continue to benefit from this optimisation. Unfortunately walk_kernel_page_table_range() does not use lazy mmu mode. However, since the pagewalk framework is not allocating any memory, we can safely bracket the whole operation inside lazy mmu mode ourselves. Therefore, wrap the call to walk_kernel_page_table_range() with the lazy MMU helpers. Link: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arm-kernel/89d0ad18-4772-4d8f-ae8a-7c48d26a927... From: Yang Shi <yang@os.amperecomputing.com> mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.18-rc1 commit a166563e7ec375b38a0fd3a58f7b77e50a6bc6a8 category: feature bugzilla: https://atomgit.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/9850 Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?i... ------------------------------------------- When rodata=full is specified, kernel linear mapping has to be mapped at PTE level since large page table can't be split due to break-before-make rule on ARM64. This resulted in a couple of problems: - performance degradation - more TLB pressure - memory waste for kernel page table With FEAT_BBM level 2 support, splitting large block page table to smaller ones doesn't need to make the page table entry invalid anymore. This allows kernel split large block mapping on the fly. Add kernel page table split support and use large block mapping by default when FEAT_BBM level 2 is supported for rodata=full. When changing permissions for kernel linear mapping, the page table will be split to smaller size. The machine without FEAT_BBM level 2 will fallback to have kernel linear mapping PTE-mapped when rodata=full. With this we saw significant performance boost with some benchmarks and much less memory consumption on my AmpereOne machine (192 cores, 1P) with 256GB memory. * Memory use after boot Before: MemTotal: 258988984 kB MemFree: 254821700 kB After: MemTotal: 259505132 kB MemFree: 255410264 kB Around 500MB more memory are free to use. The larger the machine, the more memory saved. * Memcached We saw performance degradation when running Memcached benchmark with rodata=full vs rodata=on. Our profiling pointed to kernel TLB pressure. With this patchset we saw ops/sec is increased by around 3.5%, P99 latency is reduced by around 9.6%. The gain mainly came from reduced kernel TLB misses. The kernel TLB MPKI is reduced by 28.5%. The benchmark data is now on par with rodata=on too. * Disk encryption (dm-crypt) benchmark Ran fio benchmark with the below command on a 128G ramdisk (ext4) with disk encryption (by dm-crypt). fio --directory=/data --random_generator=lfsr --norandommap \ --randrepeat 1 --status-interval=999 --rw=write --bs=4k --loops=1 \ --ioengine=sync --iodepth=1 --numjobs=1 --fsync_on_close=1 \ --group_reporting --thread --name=iops-test-job --eta-newline=1 \ --size 100G The IOPS is increased by 90% - 150% (the variance is high, but the worst number of good case is around 90% more than the best number of bad case). The bandwidth is increased and the avg clat is reduced proportionally. * Sequential file read Read 100G file sequentially on XFS (xfs_io read with page cache populated). The bandwidth is increased by 150%. From: Ryan Roberts <ryan.roberts@arm.com> mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.18-rc1 commit 3df6979d222b8638a60aa6921b73cb5f3e4f5dcb category: feature bugzilla: https://atomgit.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/9850 Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?i... ------------------------------------------- The kernel linear mapping is painted in very early stage of system boot. The cpufeature has not been finalized yet at this point. So the linear mapping is determined by the capability of boot CPU only. If the boot CPU supports BBML2, large block mappings will be used for linear mapping. But the secondary CPUs may not support BBML2, so repaint the linear mapping if large block mapping is used and the secondary CPUs don't support BBML2 once cpufeature is finalized on all CPUs. If the boot CPU doesn't support BBML2 or the secondary CPUs have the same BBML2 capability with the boot CPU, repainting the linear mapping is not needed. Repainting is implemented by the boot CPU, which we know supports BBML2, so it is safe for the live mapping size to change for this CPU. The linear map region is walked using the pagewalk API and any discovered large leaf mappings are split to pte mappings using the existing helper functions. Since the repainting is performed inside of a stop_machine(), we must use GFP_ATOMIC to allocate the extra intermediate pgtables. But since we are still early in boot, it is expected that there is plenty of memory available so we will never need to sleep for reclaim, and so GFP_ATOMIC is acceptable here. The secondary CPUs are all put into a waiting area with the idmap in TTBR0 and reserved map in TTBR1 while this is performed since they cannot be allowed to observe any size changes on the live mappings. Some of this infrastructure is reused from the kpti case. Specifically we share the same flag (was __idmap_kpti_flag, now idmap_kpti_bbml2_flag) since it means we don't have to reserve any extra pgtable memory to idmap the extra flag. From: Ryan Roberts <ryan.roberts@arm.com> mainline inclusion from mainline-v6.18-rc6 commit ce2b3a50ad922abbba36425343a1bcec46903a26 category: feature bugzilla: https://atomgit.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/9850 Reference: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?i... ------------------------------------------- It has been reported that split_kernel_leaf_mapping() is trying to sleep in non-sleepable context. It does this when acquiring the pgtable_split_lock mutex, when either CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC or CONFIG_KFENCE are enabled, which change linear map permissions within softirq context during memory allocation and/or freeing. All other paths into this function are called from sleepable context and so are safe. But it turns out that the memory for which these 2 features may attempt to modify the permissions is always mapped by pte, so there is no need to attempt to split the mapping. So let's exit early in these cases and avoid attempting to take the mutex. There is one wrinkle to this approach; late-initialized kfence allocates it's pool from the buddy which may be block mapped. So we must hook that allocation and convert it to pte-mappings up front. Previously this was done as a side-effect of kfence protecting all the individual pages in its pool at init-time, but this no longer works due to the added early exit path in split_kernel_leaf_mapping(). So instead, do this via the existing arch_kfence_init_pool() arch hook, and reuse the existing linear_map_split_to_ptes() infrastructure. This causes barriers, which would otherwise be emitted after every pte (and pmd/pud) write, to be deferred until exiting lazy_mmu mode. For large systems, this is expected to significantly speed up fallback to pte-mapping the linear map for the case where the boot CPU has BBML2_NOABORT, but secondary CPUs do not. I haven't directly measured it, but this is equivalent to commit 1fcb7cea8a5f ("arm64: mm: Batch dsb and isb when populating pgtables"). Note that for the path from arch_kfence_init_pool(), we may sleep while allocating memory inside the lazy_mmu mode. Sleeping is not allowed by generic code inside lazy_mmu, but we know that the arm64 implementation is sleep-safe. So this is ok and follows the same pattern already used by split_kernel_leaf_mapping(). Assuming that the pool was not initialised early, block splitting is necessary if the linear mapping is not fully PTE-mapped, in other words if force_pte_mapping() is false. arch_kfence_init_pool() currently makes another check: whether BBML2-noabort is supported, i.e. whether we are *able* to split block mappings. This check is however unnecessary, because force_pte_mapping() is always true if KFENCE is enabled and BBML2-noabort is not supported. This must be the case by design, since KFENCE requires PTE-mapped pages in all cases. We can therefore remove that check. The situation is different in split_kernel_leaf_mapping(), as that function is called unconditionally regardless of the configuration. If BBML2-noabort is not supported, it cannot do anything and bails out. If force_pte_mapping() is true, there is nothing to do and it also bails out, but these are independent checks. Commit 53357f14f924 ("arm64: mm: Tidy up force_pte_mapping()") grouped these checks into a helper, split_leaf_mapping_possible(). This isn't so helpful as only split_kernel_leaf_mapping() should check both. Revert the parts of that commit that introduced the helper, reintroducing the more accurate comments in split_kernel_leaf_mapping(). This mechanism was intended to be usable by realm guests since they need to dynamically share dma buffers with the host by "decrypting" them - which for Arm CCA, means marking them as shared in the page tables. However, it turns out that the mechanism was failing for realm guests because realms need to share their dma buffers (via __set_memory_enc_dec()) much earlier during boot than split_kernel_leaf_mapping() was able to handle. The report linked below showed that GIC's ITS was one such user. But during the investigation I found other callsites that could not meet the split_kernel_leaf_mapping() constraints. The problem is that we block map the linear map based on the boot CPU supporting BBML2_NOABORT, then check that all the other CPUs support it too when finalizing the caps. If they don't, then we stop_machine() and split to ptes. For safety, split_kernel_leaf_mapping() previously wouldn't permit splitting until after the caps were finalized. That ensured that if any secondary cpus were running that didn't support BBML2_NOABORT, we wouldn't risk breaking them. I've fix this problem by reducing the black-out window where we refuse to split; there are now 2 windows. The first is from T0 until the page allocator is inititialized. Splitting allocates memory for the page allocator so it must be in use. The second covers the period between starting to online the secondary cpus until the system caps are finalized (this is a very small window). All of the problematic callers are calling __set_memory_enc_dec() before the secondary cpus come online, so this solves the problem. However, one of these callers, swiotlb_update_mem_attributes(), was trying to split before the page allocator was initialized. So I have moved this call from arch_mm_preinit() to mem_init(), which solves the ordering issue. I've added warnings and return an error if any attempt is made to split in the black-out windows. Note there are other issues which prevent booting all the way to user space, which will be fixed in subsequent patches. This is done for secretmem, kfence, realm dma memory un/share, and others, by simply clearing the PTE_VALID bit. But until commit a166563e7ec37 ("arm64: mm: support large block mapping when rodata=full") large leaf mappings were never made invalid in this way. But pageattr_p[mu]d_entry() would only update the entry if it is a section mapping, since otherwise it concluded it must be a table entry so shouldn't be modified. But p[mu]d_sect() only returns true if the entry is valid. So the result was that the large leaf entry was made invalid in the first pass then ignored in the second pass. It remains invalid until the above code tries to access it and blows up. The simple fix would be to update pageattr_pmd_entry() to use !pmd_table() instead of pmd_sect(). That would solve this problem. But the ptdump code also suffers from a similar issue. It checks pmd_leaf() and doesn't call into the arch-specific note_page() machinery if it returns false. As a result of this, ptdump wasn't even able to show the invalid large leaf mappings; it looked like they were valid which made this super fun to debug. the ptdump code is core-mm and pmd_table() is arm64-specific so we can't use the same trick to solve that. But we already support the concept of "present-invalid" for user space entries. And even better, pmd_leaf() will return true for a leaf mapping that is marked present-invalid. So let's just use that encoding for present-invalid kernel mappings too. Then we can use pmd_leaf() where we previously used pmd_sect() and everything is magically fixed. Additionally, from inspection kernel_page_present() was broken in a similar way, so I'm also updating that to use pmd_leaf(). The transitional page tables component was also similarly broken; it creates a copy of the kernel page tables, making RO leaf mappings RW in the process. It also makes invalid (but-not-none) pte mappings valid. But it was not doing this for large leaf mappings. This could have resulted in crashes at kexec- or hibernate-time. This code is fixed to flip "present-invalid" mappings back to "present-valid" at all levels. Finally, I have hardened split_pmd()/split_pud() so that if it is passed a "present-invalid" leaf, it will maintain that property in the split leaves, since I wasn't able to convince myself that it would only ever be called for "present-valid" leaves. FEAT_BBML3, is introduced as part of 2025 Architecture Extensions. https://developer.arm.com/documentation/109697/2026_03/2025-Architecture-Ext...
